Frost mage question

[:1]What stats do we want most crit or mastery?
PvP or PvE?
Assuming you mean pve, the best I can find is "it depends" heh..

Basically crit is good, but don't over do it, since there is a soft cap for IL/DF/BF-FFB. Once those spells are basically "guaranteed" to crit, then stacking more crit loses a lot of value.

And haste is good as well, but you kinna hit a brick wall at a certain point because lust + veins = damn I'm casting to fast, @1300 haste I'm already at 1.14s casttime for frostbolt with lust/veins at once.

And mastery is... okay I guess... it just depends, haste isnt all that amazing for to long, and crit soft caps, so mastery is all tehre is at that point ya know?

So again, it varies by your gear what your stat weights are. But basically, early on, int/hit(till cap) > crit/haste > mastery

Stats:

The Stat order is this:

4% hit > 200-240 Spen > Intellect >>> Crit > Haste/mastery

To elaborate, you want to get 4% hit and from 200-240 Spell Penetration before you worry about your other stats. Intellect is our most important stat and gives us the greatest benefit, it gives us raw damage through spell power, a bit of crit, and a bigger mana pool (more pewpew juice). Crit is more valued over haste and mastery because of the shatter talent (3x crit on frozen targets). Haste and mastery can be good stats but are not as valued as crit.

This is not to say you have to stack crit. Depending on your play style, comp, and what area of PvP you are doing you can go down the haste or mastery path. Stacking haste or mastery can work in comps containing a rogue- you get 5% crit from their aura allowing you to sacrifice your geared crit for haste or mastery without actually giving up much crit.

Crits gives us our iconic (and big) shatter combos. The 3x crit chance against frozen targets makes it out most powerful and valuable stat (aside from int). Because of shatter, crit isn’t as RNG based as it would seem. If you are just starting out PvP I suggest gearing towards crit, it allows one to get used to the mage playstyle and rewards and shows the player successful shatters and it is the best stat to get damage out with. Once you are more in tune and comfortable with the mage class in pvp, your play style or comp may call for a switch to haste, mastery or resilience.

Haste will allow you faster casting of your damaging and controlling spells and it will lower your Global Cool Down, but the lack of crit you can have trouble putting out damage or pressure. If you are playing a comp where your damage is not needed for a guaranteed kill (your partner will do most of the damage) and you are there for CC, stacking haste can be beneficial because of your shorter GCD’s and cast time on sheep.

Mastery buffs the raw damage to targets who are frozen, it allows us to do big hits without worrying about crit’s RNG. After the nerf to our base mastery in frost, it’s not worth stacking at this point, getting it to a reasonable level can gimp your other stats, or you won’t be able to stack it to a reasonable level to make a difference.

The last stat to talk about is resilience. It is the pain and most important stat for any pvp character. You get enough base resilience from your gear that you don’t need to specifically gear for it, but if you find yourself struggling to survive getting trained in arenas, gearing for resil until you become more comfortable is a route you can take. Because it is a defensive stat though, be warned that you won’t have as much offensive power- you will have to try harder to get a kill or will need your partners to assist you more.

It is NOT a good idea to try and spread your stats, you are unable to get a “best of both worlds” mix with them. Focus on one and go for it, you can always change your mind later!

Crit till 33.34% raid buffed, then it fluctuates between haste and mastery

Overall:

Int > SP> Hit (till cap) > Crit (till cap) > Haste >= Mastery
If we are discussing PvE, crit is essential to frost dps.

Crits for, frost, increase damage signifcantly through the shatter talent, which increase crit damage by a factor based on your talent points spent in it. Not only this, but critical hits from ice lance against frozen targets can be very high as well, due to the double damage ice lance does on frozen targets.

Furthermore crits help spread chill effects from any attack to other targets. In frost there are many mechanics that make crit a very valuable stat. Mastery is simply just not nearly important. It's nice to have, but not nearly as nice as crit.
