I usually pull about 15k in Slave Pens at 64 (as the only mage) in mostly blues but not fully optimized for the class yet. With another mage it's closer to 10-11k.
A level 85 mage in my guild said I should be hitting around 22k at my level, but I never see any mages in my groups anywhere near that and I usually top the charts. I also find that trash dies so fast that it's hard to get many casts off before their eating dirt, hence the first progression.
This is what I typically do for trash pulls:
FS > BW > DB > Nova > Blizz
Larger enemies:
Pyro > FS > Combustion > BW > DB > FB/Scorch spam for HS proc
Besides gear, what can I do to up my output by 6k? If I'm alive I'm casting (something or another). Any tips would be appreciated.

Part of it depends on the trash being pulled and the comp of the party. If the DPS is high, overall, then you won't have time to get off the best AoE rotations.

What that doesn't include, incidentally is Nova or Blizz. Nova, as a fire mage, should only be used for cc in tight quarters and Blizz is useless, DPS-wise.
The key, as you will see in the discussion, is Impact and Combustion.
