PVP gemming?

I know you can't see my PVP gear cause I logged out in my raiding gear, but what does a Fire mage need?

Currently I have intellect split with Resil in almost every slot is this correct? Or should I gem straight Intellect?

Or maybe crit? lol.

Someone help? What should I have in a Blue, Red, and yellow slot?
Since Resil suffers from diminishing returns if you are about 3K you should gem for damage not Resil. Either Int or Int+Crit if you need the slot bonus.
Red, pure int
Blue, int hit
Yellow, int resil

Newbie question

What is the hit cap for an arcane mage?
Depends:

Heroic dungeons: level 87 bosses - 6%
Raiding: level 88 (skull) bosses - 17%
Leveling: No need to even think about it unless you are tackling content many (3+) levels above your current level.

The hit cap for a mob is based on the difference between your level and theirs. If you mouse over your Hit, it will tell you your chance to miss a mob of X, Y, Z, etc. level. The hit cap you could go for would be so that whatever mob you are attacking you have a 0.00% chance to miss.

Incanter's Absorption worth it?

Is this Incanter's Absorption a must talent?
The increase is 20% absorb added to damage.
This means about 500points per cast for 10secs correct?
Considering the mana cost and the lack of control (although once youve raided enough you know when you will be hit with elemental damage) Im not sure its worth it.
I presume using Mana shield as arcane considering our mastery is a little iffy at best.
I can see it being used for absolute maxing of output, however I generally prefer some of the other functional talents, Ie speed boost blink, silence CS.

Overall its not to hard to keep it up for many fights but my uncetainty remains, am I underestimating it or is it a must?
I usually throw up shields when moving and I've already casted barrage or I'm in a burn phase and I don't want to clear my stacks. Mage ward also works with it, negating fire, frost, and arcane damage.
on certain fights, on tank and spank's youd have to cast like 8 arcane blasts under its affect to make up for the 1 arcane blast you missed out on because you used a global cooldown. But on like omnitron when your running, or nef when your in transition its very good.
I keep Mana Shield up at all times and use Mage Ward when one of those 3 schools of magic will be involved. like with the elementals wandering around the Ascendent Counsel's room.

I see alot of aoe and splash damage and if using mana shield to absorb a little bit of it can help the healers even marginally then I'd do it even if Incanters Absoprtion weren't an issue. At least with the talent I get some Spellpower out of the deal.
http://wow.mmoscholar.com/2011/06/02/incanters-absorption-discussion/

Read this.

Use it during movement, or during Glyphed Arcane Power, where Mana Shield costs no GCD. It is a situational dps increase, but still a dps increase, over different talents.
I use it over Nether Vortex, since a tank should always have an attack speed slow up.
Its very situational. I like it on omnitron defense system. I dont like using mana shield too often because it does drain precious mana. But magmatron will throw out raid wide fire damage and archanotron throws out arcane so you can toss up mage ward (with glyphed AP for no GCD loss) and gain like 1200 SP. Thats big and leads to some epic burst as well as making some friends with the healers in the group.
Doesn't seem like a must. Guess I'll see in 4.2 raids. If its elemental damage all over the place it might be worth it then. Also probably with some 365 gear, mana will become less and less of an issue.

Cheers all
I don't really get the 'mana less of an issue' part. The more mana you have, the longer your burn phase can be, and the better your regen is during conserve phases, allowing more AB stacks.

I take the talent, though. It's situationally useful, but whatever. Still useful.

Shatter and % crit buffs (Question)

I am trying to find out what my crit chance is and I came across something that confused me concerning shatter. I apologize if this was already answered somewhere, I couldn't find anything on it in the stickies.

Here is my question:
When shatter recalculates crit chance, does it take crit increase buffs before hand, or after?
As an example:
Glyph of Pyroblast has 5% increase chance for pyroblast to crit.

So, say I freeze my target and cast a pyro at it, with a base of 10% crit chance to make calculation easy.

Will the crit chance be 10 * 3 for the shatter, + 5 for the glyph, making it a total of 35% crit chance on that specific pyroblast cast?

Or will the crit chance be 10 + 5 for the glyph, then 15 * 3 for the shatter, making it a 45% crit chance?

Thank you in advance for the help
To put it simply, it is just 3x whatever your current crit is. For instance let's say you start out with 20% crit and have the 5% crit glyph on frostbolt/pyro, etc. It is 25% x 3, not 20% x 3 + 5.

And in regard to buffs it is the same thing. If you have 20% then get leader of the pack and focus magic, it is 28% x 3. Not 20% x 3 + 8

Way to fix frost mages PvE dps?

(Without going overboard)

So I'm leveling a mage again (moar mages) and was reading an old post about frost mages PvE dps and it being bad (many people, like me, would love to dps as frost) and so not to make a necro'd post I thought I ought to make a new one. Annnnyyy who, the suggestion is as follows:

So we can't freeze mobs/bosses/stuff in raids so our "while frozen" spells/effects/mastery doesn't do much but give them a mild cold. Instead of buffing our damage (and making more mage burst in pvp QQ) why don't the devs just try making it where if a target cannot be frozen, it gets a debuff that treats our spells on them as frozen. That way, we can be balanced so we have competitive dps in a raid environment, without, y'know frost-busting people in pvp cause are damage inflates by like 50% on frozen targets.

This has probably been suggested times before, just couldn't find any threads on it.

If you have a better suggestion, go ahead and offer it up.

Don't like it? Love it? Smell it? Share about why, make a contribution.
You basically described Fingers of Frost, only Frostbolt is no longer affected by it.

Don't worry. Frost will be doing just fine in 4.2. Gear scaling is looking pretty promising for the spec.
Ignore the people who say frost is not PvE viable, if you actually know what you are doing it is fine already. As Steehl pointed out, Fingers of Frost is already a mechanic that lets you get the frozen bonus against targets that are immune to freeze, and Deep Freeze similarly deals damage instead of freezing on bosses.
Maybe a slight buff in Frostbolt's damage? Maybe a damage buff to Frostbolt when Fingers of Frost is active? Not anything big, but enough to boost Frost PvE DPS some.
Frost's dps is looking very good right now. The only changes I'd like to see us a reduction in waterbolt cast range ( by like 2 yards to fix the max range nova targeting) and around a 20-25% increase to blizzards damage.

Viscous Glad weapons

What's better for viscous glad, the 2H staff, or the spellblade and the offhand? I was doing the math, and it seems the staff is the better choice, but I've never been one to be too great at math.

What's your preference, and why?
The offhand enchant makes MH/OH better imho. Intellect is worth far more than a little bit of secondary stats and the 6 intellect difference on the staff.
MH/OH is a bit better. But again, a few points of Int won't be game changing in any pvp situation. Plus the staff looks good.
Yeah, my math was off of course. Well, guess I have to grind out another 3400 honor to get the other weps, as well a new Power Torrent chant and int chant.

Hooray for failing math classes!

Arcane Reforging

So i followed the Ultimate guide to PvE(All Specs) sticky at the top of these forums....i gemmed all intellect...and i reforged like this

Hit>Mastery>Crit>Haste

if it had hit and mastery i left it alone...and i am sitting at about 17% hit rating i do believe

i basically reforged all haste to hit that i could....and if i didnt need anymore i reforged all the rest of the haste to mastery or crit depending on the itemization of gear....

i know the rotation like the back of my hand, so i know thats not the problem when im pulling only 14-16k dps with all the epics i have...and someone who just specc'd to arcane in my guild came in and showed me up with 20k dps in maybe 1 or 2 epics and a lot of 333 gear and some 346 gear....i talked to him today and he was like "haste is still the most optimal stat from what i hear..." Is this true? Is my reforging wrong because the sticky was wrong?

p.s. i know im missing enchants but i didnt think it would be a 6k dps loss for not enchanting...im trying to wait til i get the highest BiS gear i could before i enchant so i dont waste gold on the mats
so i found a new reforge map...so i reforged like this:

Int>Hit to Cap>Mastery>Haste(soft cap)>Crit>More Haste

I maxed on a raiders dummy @ 16k dps....and overall after 3 burn and conserve phases i hit 10k dps

HOORAH!!! On a heroic training dummy...i hit the 22k dps that my friend hit although after a burn, conserve, burn phase i averaged 13.5k dps...and thats with ONLY my arcane buff and without focus magic...i cant wait to own my other dps friends now :D
Correct me if i am wrong, but there is no such thing as a haste soft cap for arcane because we dont have dots.
There is the possibility to hit sub 1 second cast times and running into the global cooldown.
the soft cap i heard was from what someone said above...you can run into the GCD...if you get 1.3'ish cast times and then lust...it will be a sub 1 second cast time at 4 stacks meaning a loss of dps....

this is the reason you get haste to soft cap...then crit becomes more viable...then you get haste that will take you down to 1 sec cast times outside of lust

Mastery>crit>haste is for when you have four pieces of T11. The four piece gives you 10% haste on AB so haste becomes less valuable than mastery and crit.
Personally I think the reforging priorities are like this:

Hit(below 17%) > Haste(below soft cap) > Mastery > Haste(above soft cap) > Crit

At least that seems to be how Rawr wants me to reforge.

Haste soft cap is the amount of haste that would make your AB 1.0s with 4 stack of AB, bloodlust, raid haste buff, and set bonus if applicable.

Of course with the 4set bonus you get so much haste that you will get pushed very far over the soft cap which eventually devalues haste so much that crit starts looking better.
Stat weights change constantly as you upgrade and swap out gear. There is no hard and fast correct answer. Using a sim like the one at elitistjerks.com/rawr.php is the only way to be sure of what your own particular reforging priorities are.

Alright Mages, we need to talk about portals.

Dear Mages Everywhere,

I am not trolling. I am not QQing. And I need your full and undivided...

Oh, is that a warlock? loldeepfreeze icelance icelance!

Where was I? Oh, yes. Full and undivided attention.

Before I begin, I need to ask a simple question. Would all the mages who have been asked to port someone please raise their hand?

Yes, yes, I thought as much. This is not a problem, my magical brethren! Really!

You see, when you rolled your mage, you got to a certain level, and started learning portal spells. It was amazing, wasn't it? Casting your first portal?

But then you learned you needed to carry around these "Rune of Portals" things. They cost a little bit of money, but it was no big deal. You, and your friends, could be around the world in a mere 10 seconds.

If we fast forward to the Burning Crusade, the Almighty Blizzard decided that we shouldn't be the only ones with that kind of power. They decide to put our portals in a silly building with a search light sticking out of it. But that's all cool. We can deal.

However, if we fast forward to today, those portals have been eaten by a giant dragon. (Or maybe the mages keeping them up just ran out of mana.) And now it falls on us, (yes, us!) to use that portal spell we were given soo many moons ago.

Let us not be bitter over this change, but embrace it. Embrace it, brothers and sisters! Do not desecrate our forums with QQ from us. How will we ever be respected as Almighty Mage Overlords if we do that?

Instead, I propose we here today...
  • Come up with a general price the lesser classes can fall onto to pay

  • embrace the fact that we mages were chosen for this great honor

  • Stop whining about water elemental names. Seriously, they're gone, and we all know it. If the Almighty Blizzard brings them back, then rejoice, but you're making us look bad

  • First off, we need to ban together to create a portal standard and stick to it. We are all brothers and sisters, here. We are all in this portal crisis together. We need a price. Correction, we need two prices, a "Here" price, and an "Away" price. (Now, if someone offers you more, by all means, feel free to take it. Especially if you have to travel.)
  • If the person who wishes to be ported is where you are, then I believe, personally, 3-10g is a reasonable price. Of course, this will vary with servers, but that's generally what I've seen.

  • Now, if the person who wishes to be ported is not where you are, feel free to add on an extra travel fee.

  • If people complain about this, explain to them that mages are not taxis, and that there are other methods of traveling. Point them towards a boat or zep, and wish them a happy, longer, travel.

  • The lesser classes must learn to accept their Mage Overlords. We are not water fountains, we are not taxis. If this is too much for their fragile minds to comprehend, then they will learn to reroll, and respect us mages.

As I said before, my brethren, this is not a bad change. We have been chosen. There is nothing in your magely job description that states you must portal random strangers to even more random places. (wtb mage port from exodar to shatt, anyone?) You can chose not to. But remember, do not let this affect your fellow mages. Do not whine, do not complain. In fact, I've made a handy macro for those of you who follow this path.
  • /dnd Sorry, I can't port you.

  • Use it liberally.

So there you have it, Mages. Portals. Now get back out there, and kick some warlock... face.

tl;dr stop complaining, charge for your ports, kill warlocks.
I won't even walk to the next building for 3g, much less go find someone and port them.
Eh, I suppose. I've seen some lowbie mages port for 3g, but I like 10, personally. Not outrageous, but if you're porting a bunch of people at a time, it adds up.
After reading this forum, I'm surprised. Since the patch I've been tipping 30 cause I thought prices went up...
    Not on my server.

If anything, prices went down because of too many overexcited mages, and people who whine at anything over 10g.

But like I said, it varies with servers.
I advertise in trade chat that I charge 100g or something stupid, not as a serious sell but as a whisper deterrent. 100% success rate so far with zero tells.

When I'm online, spending two minutes porting someone for what will likely be a 5-10g tip is two minutes wasted time that I could have been probing the AH or crafting, either of which is ultimately more lucrative.
I charge 20g but that is on the more expensive side on my server. I'll have to change when cata inflation hits though (and so will everyone so it's pointless reaching a consensus on how much a fair cost is for a port now).
Cant believe ive been tipping you bastards 50g.
    Sad, sad shammy.
I've seen it advertised on my server for free on occasion, 5g most of the time, and one mage offering lifetime ports for 1k.

When I get to Dalaran port levels, I will likely be charging 10g, as I can't be bothered for anything less.

The only problem - while some people might not tip at all, some others will tip generously. Finding your gp/hour from tipping as compared to a straight fee will let you find the correct price to charge.
Sadly, I left my graphs and charts on another server and I don't think that people want to spend a week getting the raw data to find the correct price to charge, so we'll just have to play it by ear.
I port friends around anytime they want. I get so many whispers for ports that I feel like public transportation. And many people ask rudely. Nowadays I don't reply to whispers unless they ask nicely and say they will tip. I have a life away from WoW so what little time I have to play I like to PvP not port people around
I put up a /dnd stating that my ports are 100g. It's mostly to stop people from spamming me with port requests, and hey, if someone does wanna give me 100g for it then I'll toss 'em one.

If you like being a low price portal hooker though, all the more power to ya, means I have less people who think I don't have better things to do that give ports all day asking me for ones :P
Man, the outright self-righteous importance, greed, and contempt for strangers coming from other Mages is baffling. Imagine if everyone had that attitude about helping anyone when all it cost them an insignificant amount of coin, and takes up some of their precious time. You have a gift/talent that helps your fellow humans. You should use it (within reason) to do so. My 10 seconds of time is not worth more than their extra 10min of travel time, and their 1-10g they might tip.

Most people are generally idiots or a-holes. What's my motivation in helping them?
Your wrong assumption that most people are idiots and a-holes makes you both. In case your mama never taught ya, doing good for good's sake is reason enough.

How much is a dungeon queue that has run 12 of an expected 15 minutes worth? How about BG queues? How often are you actually just sititng around in the particular city that someone wants a port from and doing basically nothing?
How much is a dungeon queue that has run 12 of an expected 15 minutes worth? How about BG queues? How often are you actually just sititng around in the particular city that someone wants a port from and doing basically nothing?

These situations are included in the "within reason" portion of my statement. Of course it is not reasonable to drop a queue to port someone. Or if you are getting CONSTANT whispers from people, every 2 minutes, than that would be unreasonable as well.

Someone asks for a port. Click*invite, "Please come to me." When they are near, click portal. If they open a trade window for tip, great. If not, no biggie. I do this anywhere. If I'm out questing or in cities. And most of the time I am in a city is for a daily, checking mail, crafting, or AH. None of those are interrupted so badly that I can't take a second to help another player.

Agreed... mostly. I port my guildies/friends for free at any time. I even go to them if needed nad wil drop queue if I need to (I tell them and usually they can wait). I also don't have a problem asking them for help. Shouldn't the same thing go for crafting professions as well though?
Average price I see is 5g on my server.
i've only paid 5g, any more than that seems unreasonable for an easily obtainable spell.

The whole thing reeks like tanks who advertise in trade to sell "instant queues".

Just port people who ask you, or ignore them if you don't feel like it. They will just find someone else to do it.

If they give you a tip, accept it if you want, otherwise decline it. The reagent cost is meaningless.

And this might surprise you, but *most* mages don't extort a fee for casting a portal spell.

Arcane Mage T12 4-set...Good? Bad? or Ugly?

I'm going to take my best guess here as to how this T12 4-set bonus "Arcane Power decreases the costs of your damaging spells by 10%" works. If anyone knows differently please correct me.

    Currently:

    0.050 * 17,418 = 870.90 (ABx0) 5% of base mana
    0.125 * 17,418 = 2177.25 (ABx1) Base 5% + 7.5% = 12.5% of base mana
    0.200 * 17,418 = 3483.60 (ABx2) Base 5% + 15.0% = 20.0% of base mana
    0.275 * 17,418 = 4789.95 (ABx3) Base 5% + 22.5% = 27.5% of base mana
    0.350 * 17,418 = 6096.30 (ABx4) Base 5% + 30.0% = 35.0% of base mana

I imagine this means that if Arcane Power is active then:

ABx0 costs 87.1 less mana to cast
ABx1 costs 217.7 less mana to cast.
ABx2 costs 348.4 less mana to cast.
ABx3 costs 479.0 less mana to cast.
ABx4 costs 609.6 less mana to cast.

Currently in a raid environment I have a 1.2 second cast time with everything reforged into Mastery/Hit, so my haste isn't all that high, but that's what the stat weights dictate currently, so that's what I've done. This of course takes into account my T11 4-set bonus of 10% faster arcane blast cast time.

Therefore, in 4.2 I will be casting arcane blasts 10% slower. Let's just guestimate and say in a raid buffed environment, I will now be casting Arcane Blastx4's @ 1.3 seconds instead of 1.2.

That being said, Arcane Power lasts 15 seconds and can be cast every 1 minute and 30 seconds. Provided I wait till I have a 4 stack, and cast nothing but Arcane Blasts and keep my 4 stack the whole time, I could theoretically get off 11 AB's within the time Arcane Power is active.

    11 x 609.6 mana = ~6706 mana saved per Arcane Power.

Let's say an encounter lasts 10 minutes.

I can cast Arcane Power *6* times during that encounter, and provided I use it optimally (as stated above) all 6 times..

I will save a grand total of 40,236 mana for the entire 10 minute encounter.

I'll leave it up to you guys...

Do you think this is a worthy T12 4-set bonus for Arcane when you compare it to Fire's 30% chance to proc Hotstreak on crits, and other classes 4-set bonuses?

(This of course is all based on whether or not I'm correct on how the 10% reduction in mana costs works with the 4-set bonus)

Edit: After testing Arcane Power on a test dummy, I discovered something interesting. I noticed that currently (4.1 live), it seems to work off the base mana cost of Arcane Blast, and it increases the cost of our Arcane Blasts with 4 stacks by only 87 mana (870 base AB mana cost x 10% more = 87 more mana to cast).

This kind of concerns me, because if this is the way it works it's not really much of a penalty at all, and I'll have to admit I thought it was a lot more than an 87 mana penalty until I just tested it.

On the flip side, it will probably work the same way with the T12 4-set, but instead of increasing the cost by 87 mana it will decrease it by 87 mana. This would be almost akin to having no 4-set bonus at all if this is the case. 87 mana is nothing when you consider how much stacked arcane blasts cost to cast.

Can anyone shed some light on this?
It's kind of meh but because arcane scales so ridiculously well with gear / int the spec will probably still win out single-target once in heroic modes.
I heard from Lhivera or someone else credible that it only decreases AB mana by the baseline amount, not scaling.

Of course, I could ludicrously off.

How does stacking crit/haste feel as fire?

    FIRE:

I'm interested in hearing from someone who has stacked both at some point and can give an explanation of a bit of the mechanics of raiding with priority (crit > haste), or (haste > crit).

What percentage of our total damage is ignite/combustion/pyroblastDOT/living bomb?

I'm less interested in which wins the damage but rather which fits me better.
I can honestly say as Fire, when comparing haste/crit stacks, while having plenty of crit is a good thing for your spells, the haste though IF you can get enough haste to the point of getting that 'extra tick' in with your dots, really helps with your overall dps. I found myself in the end making sure my Hit rating was up though cause well, missed spells=less dps :P

    Just me though.
When I was fire (before 4.1), I went from stacking crit to stacking more haste. Didn't really notice critting less (yeah, yeah - RNG....), however I was getting alot more casts off, so I saw a more stable DPS increase, since I wasn't so concerned with critting - didn't have mana issues either. Stacking haste felt more fluid, of course.
I have tried both stacking haste and stacking crit and so far stacking crit once i have reached 12.5% haste is better.

    therefore in easier words:
    12.5% haste > Stack crit

should i go fire or stick with frost?

for off spec mind you i mainly play pve but i hear frost is getting a buff in the next patch personally i like fire more but i don't think my gear is good enough for it... any tips on that would help too thanks in advance.
Honestly stick with the one you like the most. I do Fire with a frost off spec, but this is to fill rolls with my guild.

    Question regarding arcane.

    Hello mages

I have recently obtained the Molten Front vendor trinket 'Moonwell Chalice' and am curious as to when exactly I should be using it.

At the moment its being used with my burn phase along with arcane power and mana gem.
Would using it at another time prove to be more beneficial?
    burn
    I use mine during burn.

Mana adept actually remains fairly powerful even when your mana is low, and having that increased mastery during the burn will increase your damage even though you're not in conserve and thus not at full mana.

    Fire Mage Double proccing?

Hi. I am a simple fire mage, that does a well amount of damage when I raid or carry on. Now, ever since 4.1, I believe, was released I seem to have a re-occurring problem. When my "Hot Streak" procs, it, more then sometimes, procs twice at the same time. One would think that "Oh, double proc, sweet!" but I find this very irritating. The buff would proc twice, at the exact same time, meaning that I lost some dps not getting the first one off. An addon I use, CombustionHelper, usually tells me that "You wasted a Hot Streak, it procced again without being used" or something like that. I also have this same re-occurring problem on my Ret paladin with the Art of War. Does anyone have this problem? Or is it just me?
Its a problem with tier 3 and tier 4 hotstreak talents proccing simulaneously. Which means Tier 3's completely random proc just decides its going to pop up the same time you got 2 crits in a row which would proc the tier 4 hotstreak.

    Polymorph Macro Question

    Hi folks,

I was looking at the PVP macro sticky and was hoping I could just clarify something about the Polymorph Macro.

What does the macro below do?

    Here is what I think,

    shows the poly tooltip
puts the elemental on passive so it doesn't do anything silly
clears my focus if my current focus is dead - not sure on the second part of line 3??
makes my current target my focus
cast polymorph on my target or if i hold down the shift key on my focus
no idea what the nomod:shift line is for??
stops the macro if i'm not in a group
and if i'm in a group tells the party i'm trying to polymorph something

    #showtooltip
    /petpassive
    /clearfocus [target=focus,dead][target=focus,noexists]
    /focus [target=focus,noexists]
    /cast [mod:shift, target=focus] Polymorph;
    /cast [nomod:shift] Polymorph
    /stopmacro [nogroup}
    /p !! Sheeping “%T”

    ----------
    and finally
can i add a line to the above macro to raid mark whatever I just turned into a monkey?

    thanks in advance

    Bargle the not so famous

It casts polymorph, on your focus if you hold shift and on your target if you don't hold shift....

Please help a starting mage :)

Ok so i was in a battleground and out of no where a mage by the name of Iceicebebe 2 shots me with frostbolt. Afterwards i looked him up in the armory and his spell power was 260. Also i had medium / high health at the time for the level. Here is what i need help with. 1. Was it his spell power that did the damage to me or something else? 2. If it was spell power how did he get so much of it at a low level? Please help me this is my first mage and i want to play him well. The link to his character is here

    http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/caelestrasz/Iceicebebe/advanced
He has full BoAs- they give you very good stats.

Basically- he had better gear than you.
Two crits would've taken out just a bit over your max health.

    deep ring

do ppl still do this in arena?
    bump
Not really, although I'm sure in very rare situations it could be useful.
    Not really.

Used it once on a druid who was in tree form when I NEEDED to CC him for a kill, but that's it.
also is an ele shaman a good partner for a frost mage?

I've seen very few people do well with an ele so far.
Mage/ele/disc does insane amounts of dmg but ele lacks defensive tools. Maybe it will be decent later in the season, but who knows.

You could do well if your bg doesnt have too many melee cleaves or rogue teams.

how to cast ice block and not cancel it?

yes I read the macro sticky, nothing there.

I, as I am sure many people have, might end up pressing ice block an extra time. This ends up cancling it, and has gotten me killed more than a few times. is there a macro or option such that I can afford an accidental extra press of the button and not die horribly because iceblock instantly falls off me?
I thought you actually had to use a macro to make it possible to cancel it by hitting the same button.
    #showtooltip Ice block
    /Cast !Ice block

    blech humans
    #showtooltip Ice block
    /Cast !Ice block

Make a seperate macro with /cancelaura Ice Block attached to it.

    For example, I have...

    #showtooltip Ice Lance
    /cancelaura Ice Block
    /cast Ice Lance

Make sure it's an easy access key so you can get out of the block quick if need be (just be sure it's the right choice if you do)!

    So confused

So I am an arcane mage mainly, I tried frost last night on majordomo, because my arcane was not doing amazing, it's burst is high then I'd fall to like 13-15 on the charts..So frost was doing okay until at the end I died.

So we start on rag..I go back arcane with my frost gear..And my dps is ridiculously better than it was when my gear was reforged a ton of mastery...Now it's more crit more haste less mastery..Honestly I do so much more dps. The simulations show it a few hundred dps near the gear before.

But I definitely do a lot more now. I feel the crit is just amazing, with the amount I have and the 15% crit buff you get with presence of mind or clearcasting. And you get more clearcasting because you cast more because slightly more haste..Which all around ends up in more crits in combination with fm.

Even the times I didn't get a lot of crits, it still was better because I guess I got more ABs off?

Heres my armory link, I took like not a lot of time to reforge so it is a kind of sloppy reforge, and wasn't full maximized for frost dps wise.
    http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/crushridge/Dist/simple
It was all of the pulls though, and it's not just 18.09%

You have to take into consideration, 5% from raid, 5% boss debuff with a warlock, 3% fm, 3% when some1 else crits from fm. Also, flasks and buffs for int increase crit. What else...AND

Arcane has arcane potency, which is 2 stacks of 15% crit, ontop of all of that. (When it procs from clearcasting or presence of mind)

AND I looked at recount, and sometimes I was under-critting to what I should of been. It just seems it has been better for burn phases, and burn phases are a LOT of our dmg and dps it feels.
I don't think you are keeping your mana high enough then
    it's so confuse
But I when I go into a conservation phase I kept it 90-100...I mean, I wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting mana by letting it regen more than I had. Which is what you are supposed to do, the lowest it dips is like 94%.

So..Idk..I mean I will stick to this gear for a bit...Aslong as I do great numbers and it continues to rise with gear.

Any guide around here for PvP?

    For strats. Glyphs and stuff?

Xiun's guide is good for beginners.

    http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2711932054
There's a nice Fire guide if you want to do that.

also: Xiun's guide was on page 7! SEVEN! D:

    Frost rotation help, Fire Blast?

I don't see it anywhere in the PvE guides...but with Ignite..idk? Isn't it worth casting on CD?

Arcane PVP Tips, Tricks, Talents, and Glyphs

I thought I would start an arcane pvp thread for 4.2, since there seems to be very little up-to-date info on it at the moment. I know it is not considered a pvp spec for mage, but I like the mechanics better and have played both frost and arcane in pvp and so far, even though I am still gearing up, arcane does seem viable with less survivability but more dps output than frost.

So any tips or discussion are welcome.
Arcane, in the current state of the game, is not a viable PvP spec.

The problem lies in that arcane has horrible defenses compared to fire/frost and gets utterly shut down whenever something is training it.

When you have a melee sitting on you as frost, for, instance, you have 3 roots with lowered cooldowns, ice barrier, deep freeze, and stronger mobile damage with FoF lances / FFB procs.

As fire, you have impact stun, blazing speed (huge), dragon's breath, blast wave, and literally all of your DPS can be done while moving.

It's just that whenever there is an arcane mage in PvP, the solution is to train him mindlessly, and you will win. When you don't (and good players always will), then fire and frost are still arguably on par with arcane. They have more control, and a little less damage.
Dragon hit the nail on the head.

Only place it has is in RBGs and then all you do is hit arcane blast on the kill target and that only lasts for a few minutes. They'll remember you and then you're on top of the kill list and won't do any damage.
Thanks for the replies guys, that saddens me to hear. To Dragonheart, it is possible to spec into blazing speed and and the procced stun. do you think that would make a big difference for arcane or very little?

fire mage pvp tricks and combos

i made this simply for people wanting to go fire and get sik of it to quik, i honestly think fire is the most enjoyable mage class to place simply you can move unlike arcane. Anyways a few things bout fire pvp, a big thing is shatters simply because our main move in pvp is scortch which crits at like 10-15k, like scortch/impact, also pyro scortch impact (this can total around 45k damage when they crit), and obviously fireball pyro shatter
i also shatter scortch with spellsteal especially on a ret pali with wings up.

Now onto cc combos, only on casters a simple CS then poly is super effective but can be seen as a waste of CS, also DB hard cast pyro shatter LB, nova, blink opens up your opponent quit well, i also try to use my CS as soon as i pop combusion on classes with dispel nothin worse than that
but thing i find most annoying is waiting for cc's to get off cooldown, i fixed this by specing into imp cone of cold 10 sec cool down 4 sec snare, i use this whenever i can to keep cc on target while waiting for main moves like DB and nova and BW.

But a massive part is impact, ill always save this for interupting rather than spreading a dot combo without combusion in there
ill also use it like this DB hard cast pyro LB nova blink scortch impact scortch CoC, also i think ill include if they trinket your DB which wnt usually happen but if it does wrecks that combo, and your left with nothing acept nova blink and then what, but anyways moving on, ill also use impact RoF CoC to get away ill sometimes use impact poly but only at range and at start of fight cause it has to annoyingly heal them
ok enough of impact, onto when things just arnt going your way, now in the rare case when your gonna die (unlikely lols) you have cauterize at start of cata it was said to use mage ward for it to absorb it and get blazing speed but that never works for me i either have another fire dot on me which will be absorbed isntead of the fire i just decided to kill myself with, instead wait for cauterize and ice block it
that way you can CS poly if caster, or if melle they will be in your face and DB poly them then simply evocate and almost 100% health back and if you do alcamy like me get a health potion to get u back up, this if timed correctly will change the outcome significantly just continue the cc before poly breaks, ill also ad if they trinket your poly your screwed if you have no cc cooldowns also they will waste your evocate...not good
if your smart you will force them to trinket before you get to that stage, a good way is to poly at start of fight, also if you have time warp up you will evocate faster and get some distance.

That will do for me now, if you could rate this post and any other ideas would be awsome im always lookin for new tricks to romp rogues especially anyways hope you learned something new and dont forget to rate
Why do you keep spelling scorch wrong?

What weapon to use pre raid??

Right now I have the staff from ZG and a MH/OH combo from just regular heroics. The MH/OH have more int than the staff, should I use that instead?? Or is there a better weapon that drops in zg/za that would be better??

Basically trying to decide what I want to put power torrent on. I am mostly using arcane now, but I have specs for both arcane and fire and plan to use both.
The 353 staff *should* end up with a higher amount of SP and secondary stats than 346 MH/OH Combo

Can you post which you are choosing between?
    http://www.wowhead.com/item=56357
    http://www.wowhead.com/item=57923

I have the off hand from beauty too if that would be better.
quick maths says go with the staff:

338 Int on your MH/OH combo (counting enchant) vs 323 Int on the staff BUT:

1729 SP on MH/OH and 1849 SP on staff. Int is the best stat for mages, but the high disparity between the SP on the two options and the low difference of Int makes the staff a better choice.

Alternatively, though, you could consider going for the ZA Dagger ( http://www.wowhead.com/item=69591 ). With the dagger, you would have the higher amount of Int (346 in this case) and SP at the trade off of diminished secondary stats (since the only 353 OH I saw was a spirit one from ZG)

    About hit cap...

I am having trouble staying hit cap as I get better gear in raids. I am wondering if it is more worth it to have as much intellect as possible or getting hit cap? The only way right now for me to hit cap is to gem and enchant for it or to use Stump of Time which I am told is worse than the trinkets I have now.

Obviosuly I am not doing heroic raids, for now at least, but I am wondering if it gets easier to hit cap with better gear? It seems there is not much cloth gear with hit in heroic raid, so maybe it is normal not to hit cap. :/

    Sorry for my bad english.
It becomes nearly impossible to stay hit capped when you move into heroic raids this tier. It's not too big of an issue as the gear is still a DPS increase over normal mode drops and Firelands VP gear has a lot more hit options.

    Vashj'ir

I enjoyed this zone as a rogue, but found it terrible on my mage. Maybe I'm missing some tricks? First, you can't eat or drink underwater which was a big handicap for me, especially with the harder-hitting cataclysm NPCs. Second, correct placement of AoE spells while not on the sea surface seems almost impossible. So it's off to Hyjal.
Most would say the opposite - Vashj'ir is better for ranged classes over melee because you don't need to find the mobs to stay in melee range.

You can eat/drink underwater, you simply need to have completed the quest that gives you the underwater breathing buff and then you aslo need to be on the sea floor. You can't eat/drink while floating.

However, I'm guessing Mt. Hyjal is a better choice because I believe you need to do one of the chains in there in order to unlock the fireland dailies anyway.

Placing AoE is harder underwater. Trick is to pull the mobs to the sea floor if you want to use targeted AoEs
Yeah I did about 3 quests as a mage in Vashj until I went off onto another zone.

Was really fun on my rogue though.

FYI: If you "land" on the sea floor you can eat and drink.
Thanks for the sea floor tip about eating and drinking.
you should go to Hyjal to open up the dailies at 85.. besides that, I luv Vashj'ir. It's like playing in Finding Nemo. Really awesome zone.

    Best rotation lv 43 Arcane

I recently changed from fire to arcane just to see which one does more dps. I'm having a hard time figuring out the best rotation for increased dps. Any help would be great.
Wait till you get mage armor to go arcane, otherwise you're looking at a lot of downtime.
Naw, at 42 mana regen is so quick right now. I didn't really have mana issues until outland as I leveled my mage last week.
you don't have a rotation at level 43. just push your buttons until whatever you've got targeted is dead. try to use things like arcane blast, arcane barrage, arcane missiles and fire blast. maybe arcane explosion and flame strike. have fun and remember to use blink a lot because that spell is ballin!
    LOL......Ok i feel a lot better now thanks e1.
im pretty sure arcane rotation goes

arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane blast, arcane missiles. Rinse repeat.
At that low a level arcane blast is your go-to spell. when you get higher ab ab am barrage will usually kill something and won't eat up mana

    frost pvp crit ?

I'm an inexperienced pvper, so can someone please explain why most frost mages only run with 17%ish crit? Yeah I know mastery stacking is very powerful for frost, but aren't mages completely reliant on crits for damage? Should I only get to 17% or so, even if I'm not planning running with a rogue or feral and start stacking mastery after that point?
    Thanks, 00troll
    I run with 15% lol.

It's annoying to have my damage be RNG but I would much rather have the huge stupid crits than low crits that don't do that much damage.

It's not that big of a deal, just frustration.
Mastery is more RNG what the !@#$ burst, where as crit is more sustained, as much as you can be with a frost mage lol.

Honestly I dont think it makes that significant of an impact.
Mastery is guaranteed to be used, where as crit isn't. That is, when you don't crit all the crit rating you stacked got wasted. Mastery however, is always used.

How many times do I have to link my friends calc?

    http://ragial.com/mdamage/

Please read his thread that is linked to within in the calc.
On my main, i run with 18% with complete reforge to mastery, 3500 resil with the heroic tier leg.
Even at 15%.. you get 5% from Glyphed Molten Armor. Having a Fire Mage or Destro Warlock puts 5% debuff on the target, and a few classes (and hunter pets) provide 5% crit buff. This is 30% right there. 30% x 3 = 90%.

Let an arcane mage FM you, and you are at 33% = 99%.

EVEN at 15% and nothing else available, that's still 45% chance in reality. So it's really not THAT low. I think even in PVP it's important that somehow you get close to 20% (with buffs). 60% just puts the odds in your favor.

EDIT DEPT: Didn't see the "pvp" aspect in the title my bad, lol. But like I said, even without any other buffs/debuffs, that 15% is considered 45% crit, which is still pretty good.

Arcane rotation, a more in depth question:

    Hi all,

Just a quick one about when you Arcane Power / PoM AB the 2nd time round.

    Q. Do you use those above CD's as soon as they are off CD or save them for the next burn phase??? (which is about 40 seconds later)

    A. ?
    Deleted by Lessismagic
I wait to use AP till the gem is up, which will also coincide with evoc coming off CD as I end that burn phase.

In my mind it is not usually worth it use AP without the gem, one because the SP bump is the difference(for me) of 90k ABs and 110-120 ABs. Also by the time the gem is up evoc should be nearly off CD as I mentioned above.

As for PoM it depends on what is going on honestly. It is nice to use on the AB before you pop AP just because you will get 15% crit chance on that first one, but I use it while moving a lot too.
Wait for gem to be off CD.

Also wait for evo, if necessary. It should have 20-30 seconds left on it's CD depending on your regen and fight mechanics.

When you look at a good WoL report for an arcane mage you should see a large spike at the start of the fight with another large spike every 2 minutes, with a final spike at the end when they are emptying their remaining mana.

In between the spikes it should stay pretty consistent.
The key to burn phase is to stack as much cooldowns on top of each other as possible. You want all the valves wide open for your burn phase, since another 1000 spell power or whatever really isn't going to amount to much during your conserve phase, but it with four stacks of AB it becomes fairly significant.

I think it's important for Arcane mages to have an on-use trinket they can trigger for the burn phase as well, preferably Int or at least spellpower, but anything that increases your DPS on demand that you can sync with Mana Gem and Arcane Power will help a lot. If you've got a trinket or something that increases your Int on demand, remember to use it before you use the Mana Gem, since the increased mana pool means more spell power from the gem. If you're clever with your Incanter's Absorption you can steal another 3000 spell power or so if there's someplace to safely soak a bit of damage right when you pull the trigger.

PoM is really up to you. There are plenty of different ways to use it and they all add to your DPS, so long as you remember to use at least one of 'em. Like Setis posted, using it to trigger your 4th AB right before your use the Super Sayan macro will leave you with a charge of Arcane Potency for that first, most powerful cast. Another option is to use it for the first AB you cast in the ramp up to the burn phase, since that will have the longest cast time and get you ramped up quicker than if you used it on the last. Some players don't use it for attacking at all, and keep it in case they need a new mana gem halfway through the fight, although I think it makes more sense to just make sure you're going into the pull with three charges anyway.

Of course, it can also make sense to save it for the conserve phase or the second half of the burn phase so you have an instant cast in hand if you need to reposition. If you know there's some AoE to be done and something, maybe some *%!! on the ground or whatever, is going to keep you from running in with AE, PoM into Blizzard will proc an awful lot of crits. And finally, one last thing I like to do is Flame Orb into a PoM, and use the Arcane Potency procs on the back to back AM that follow.
The only thing I have to say is that think about each fight and figure out if your burn would be better to use in 10 seconds when you will be doing vastly more damage due to a mechanic or something.

    Mager Mage >.> <,<

Hey i just wanted to know if im geming / enchanting / re4ging / specing right on my mage >< im more of a video type guy but cant find any good youtube videos for cata mages ! so could you guys helpz me out ? <3 (Spelt it re4ging cuz this kid next to me in class says i cant say reforj'in ....)
    No one?
You shouldn't gem fro crit as arcane, it's fine for frost but you have very little haste, 753 haste wasn't even great in Wrath. Never reforge out haste, unless you have way too much and you currently have very little haste. You want to reach the 1 sec GCD. After that, all the excess haste can be reforged into mastery.

So in those yellow sockets instead of using intel + crit. use a reckless instead ( + 20 intel + 20 haste), or if the socket bonus is not great then use a + 40 intel.

    What proffesion for mage...

Hey all just wanted to ask about a proffesion for my mage im starting, im thinking about either Alchemy or Inscription with Herbalism, what do yall think. currently my Hunter is going to have Enchanting with Skinning and my Rogue has JC and Mining.
Thnx in advance for the help.
I chose alchemy and herbalism, and it works fine for me. Potions last twice as long and are more potent, and I transmute truegold to make money. Also, you can make a nice 359 trinket that gives good intellect and boosts mana and health potions.
It really just depends on what you're wanting and what you plan on doing with your mage. Do you plan on raiding? If so I would advise dropping Herbalism once you have maxed your other profession, and picking up the other herb based one. Herbalism's haste buff just isn't very good in comparison to the crafting profs perks. Having one toon dedicated to farming, which you don't intend on raiding with is a better option imo.
I think the best for raid wise is tailoring and JC.
Hey thnx for the help i like what you said about having one toon dedicated to crafting and another to farming, i think ill do that.
we thnx again and have fun yall

    Polymorph suggestion.. for blizz

IF someone gets the glyphs of polymorph monkey and penguine it should make you rotate through all three randomly... Would be sick :-P
It wouldn't be sick, it'd be useless. Just sayin'.
there all minor glyphs anyhow so its not like its a big deal
    Polymorph into murloc.
Wish we could Polymorph the OP into someone with good ideas.

    Suggestion for Arcane AOE.

[Insert Cool Talent Name Here]: When a target afflicted with Slow is damaged by your Arcane Missiles they will detonate causing an Arcane Explosion damaging enemies within a 10 yd radius for 25/50% of the normal damage done by the spell. (Wording needing some help)

This would still benefit from the effects of AB. I mean what could be cooler than half a dozen AE's going off in about the span of a second?
There is only 1 change that needs to be made to arcane AoE, and it is changing this:

    Improved Arcane Explosion Rank 2
Reduces the global cooldown of your Arcane Explosion spell by 0.5 sec, reduces the threat generated by 80%, and reduces the mana cost by 50%.

    To this:

    Improved Arcane Explosion Rank 2
Increases the global cooldown of your Arcane Explosion spell by 0.5 sec, reduces the threat generated by 80%, increases the damage done by 100%, and reduces the mana cost by 50%.

AE spamming fingers everywhere will be thankful.
The only reason I never liked that talent was because in order to take advantage of it you need to thrust your self in the middle of a pack of mobs. Logically speaking, if I were a mage, why the [bleep] would I ever resort to doing that?

As it stands right now AM is lackluster. Back in the day it was cool. At least through that talent it could be somewhat cool again and have a sweet secondary effect including helping out with a problem area for arcane.
Increases the global cooldown of your Arcane Explosion spell by 0.5 sec, reduces the threat generated by 80%, increases the damage done by 100%, and reduces the mana cost by 50%
...Sounds like a nerf.. That is alot less aoe per stack refresh.
My arcane explosion is on my mouse wheel backscroll. I couldn't imagine having it anywhere else.

How could your AE benefit from AB stacks if you just cast AM, reducing your stacks to 0???
So you should get free cleave damage while you are pumping out awsome single target dps?

I might be ok with this, if you had to actually cast and refresh slow.

    Assistance Please.

    Noble Arcane Mages,

I seem to be doing something wrong with my gear. I've reforged haste into hit, then mastery, and crit into mastery. Gems are all int gems unless socket bonus is 20 int or above.

    Rotation is:
    Burst:
AB to 90%, mana gem, AB to 30%, evocate to 100%.
    Conserve:
AB and AM staying above 90% mana.

I can only pull 17-20k dps.
I know with my gear I should be pulling better dps. Any tips about what I could do to improve my dps would be greatly appreciated.
A few things I would change:

    • You should use the Mage Armor Glyph instead of the Arcane Barrage Glyph. Additionally, if you were casting arcane barrage very regularly... stop. You should only very rarely ever want to use arcane barrage. The only time you would possibly use it is if you need to move, and have nothing else worthwhile to cast.

    • Also, you should be using the Glyph of Arcane Power, probably instead of the Glyph of Mana Shield

    • Haste should be one of your top stats unless you are still wearing 4pc t11. Just dont go over the haste softcap.

    • Get rid of that green gem in your chest piece. If you are intent on keeping the socket bonus, you would fill the blue socket with a veiled demonseye. However, I would strongly recommend just ignoring the socket bonus there, and using 2 brilliant rubies

    • The Rune of Zeth trinket is pretty bad for arcane. I would suggest the Moonwell Chalice or the Darkmoon Volcano in place of it.

I'm only at 362 and i do a lot more damage than you. You're doing something very seriously wrong. I'm around 23k usually. As far as helping, man, i don't know. go to http://www.elitistjerks.com and brush up on your rotation or something. I'm sure gear/gems or anything else really isn't the problem here.

Haste to 1768 then go for mastery. Shoulder enchant = win.

    combust question

i've been trying to figure out when is the right time to use a combust. i feel that i don't use it often enough cause i can't seem to get a good lineup.

i've been doing it with living bomb up, pyro dot, and some type of crit ignite and the highest combust dot i've been able to get is 6k.

i guess my question is whether that is a decent combust dot considering my gear lvl, or should i be doing something different?

Checkout the addon combustionhelper, you can get it from curse.com.

you can set the dot thresholds and all that.
You can get the Combustionhelper addon.
The Ignite Monitor in Mage Nuggets is also essential: http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/mage-nuggets.aspx

    Haste Vs Crit

If you go haste and get around.. lets say you got around 8-9% haste what would the difference in damage be if you switch that to all crit? would it make a large enough difference to do that? or should yo just stay with haste?

    Impact bugged?

Both on a dummy and in a heroic my impact is not spreading living bomb charges. Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

    Which offhand is better here....?

So I'd like to get some opinions on this gear option for future reference of similar options....

With the T12 4-piece eq'd (giving more worth for haste since I do not have t11 now), which offhand would be better?

    Heroic Book of Binding Will
    or
    Regular Molten Scream

The difference is 12 intellect and 13 of a secondary stat, although I am trading haste for crit.

I had obtained the 378 offhand last night because nobody wanted it, it is better till I obtain my legs this tuesday, but not sure if it will be better once I switch set pieces

    Help with cauterize DoT

Is there any other way to survive the DoT from cauterize besides Ice Block?

I try to hit Mage Armor and Mana Shield before it kicks in but I always die to the DoT unless I have Ice Block off cd.
Mana Shield and Mage Ward. Often, in PvP, those two won't be enough because of the other incoming damage. The best is to have a healer heal you or to Evocate glyphed (other than Ice Block of course).
Yeah, I'd put up shields and be prepared to Evocate if needed.
Awesome, thanks for the answers all. Guess I will start looking at putting Evocate on the short list when Ice Block is on CD.
When you know cauterize is about to proc, put mage ward up BEFORE hand. itll save you a GCD and start helping from the very first tick.

otherwise be very very ready to evo
Post-proc Mage Ward is also effective, particularly if you have good healers. I also macro it with Gift of the Naaru and any other healy tricket/item I happened to have to give my healers a few extra seconds.
Just do what I do and sit in it and blame the healer.
I thought mage ward would have been able to save you, unless you're still taking damage from whatever procced cauterise in the first place.
If I get below 40% I start kiting towards leaf spawn, If in EoTS I hope to get lucky in towers with buffs. Just a safe way to play if you get intecepted and have no choice but to fight. Otherwise try to peel and heal up before Cauterize proc. Otherwise what everyone else said pop shields evocate LoS. Good Luck to all you fire mages representing!

    PVE Frost or Balance?

I need some advice. I am having trouble deciding which toon to make my new main. I will be raiding and doing dailies.

I have been loving the control and burst I have with Frost (now at 68) and have been near the top of the damage meters so far but we all know that all bets are off at 85. I am not a min maxer at all...in fact I tend to go for less played specs.

Still the balance druid I have is also doing fairly well...is top dps per raidbots...and the shapeshifting harvesting seems almost unfair :p

I think I would prefer the frost but I don't want to be a hinderance either to my raid.
If you know what you're doing as frost then damage will never be an issue. It is worth noting however that boomy's bring 5% spell haste and also have great AoE potential (two things which frost most definitely lacks). They also have good single target. It's completely up to you, but i do find frost incredibly fun.

    mining/skinning on mage

in the grand scheme of things does it REALLY make that big of a difference? can i make a ton of money off minin/skinng? or is it such a h uge deal that i should build tailoring/enchanting from scratch?
I personally went Mining and Engineering, and i love it. i can make some gold with Mining, and the toys you get as an Engineer are pretty sweet. Besides, I'm a goblin. We are made to blow stuff up. I thought about being a tailor, also, but since I also have first-aid, i thought that sounded a bit heavy on the cloth.
You might want to take herbalism and skinning instead. Mining makes good profit, but that Toughness buff you get from the profession is not for casters. Herbalism comes with a healing ability.
You sound like you are more looking at the "money making/gathering" approach. To respect that I will say def go for the skinning. It increases your critical strike rating... so that should be a bonus. As for mining... I wouldn't recommend that for a mage. Not over herbalism, as someone mentioned it has a heal, but Lifeblood more importantly increases your haste (Lifeblood got a makeover, so its not just a minor heal anymore). But unless you prefer the extra stamina from Toughness, I would take the gather skill with haste. Its up to you, but skinning and herbalism would be my choice for the money making :)

Also, there is no guarantee that you will make a ton of money going after just gathering professions... But at the same time you may not make any money going after a crafting one. Depends on what you do with it and why you went for it. I usually go for them to get the bonuses, such as enchanted rings, epic gems, shoulder enchants... you get the idea. Selling things on the side just is a pay off to the effort I put forth.

    Cheers :)
I'm skinning/enchanting and I have to say that it has been unbelievably easy so far. My enchanting is over 470 (I'm level 84 at the moment) and I've only had to grind a little bit for mats at the end of TBC and Wrath. As for skinning... Well, I maxed skinning at level 75 in the midst of leveling in Scholazar Basin. I didn't even know it was POSSIBLE to max a prof at 525 without touching Cata! But apparently you can do it with skinning. I haven't been making a ton of money but I certainly have been able to sustain myself very well. I bought all my flying training with ease. Having extra pocket money allowed me to occasionally buy what I couldn't DE enough of for enchanting. I'm sure tailoring coupled with enchanting would have been easier to make my own mats but honestly, it hasn't been difficult without tailoring (and tailoring isn't making much on my realm). I queue my dungeons nonstop and DE all the drops I win (and can't wear). Most of the stuff I pick up in dungeons way surpasses stats of my questing rewards so my rewards end up being disenchanted for dust and shards.

Having +80 crit bonus in the level mid 70s made my mage a beast very early on. I've found it to be a very nice passive bonus! And +80 int that I will eventually get from enchanting my own gear will be icing on the cake.
I don't get the min-maxing "best" professions type of thing. Every profession is good if that's how you want to play. I dropped enchanting for engineering because 1: I had money to blow 2: Jeeves, Mailboxes and all that are great for me when I solo stuff and 3: I've always wanted an engineer for the hell of it.

I say double gathering professions is a wise choice if you stick to farming because you can make a lot of gold these days if you put some effort into it.

    Spec Suggestions for New 85

I have just recently leveled my mage to 85, and I'm looking to get into heroics and eventually raids as soon as possible. Is there an ideal spec for me to use in my dungeon running at this time, or are my options pretty much even?

    Fresh 85

Hey all, I just hit 85 last night and this my first max-level character. I read the Pre-Raid item guide stickied which is great and I will be using it to maximize my time in-game. My question is about when do I start bothering with enchants, gems, etc? Am I expected to have all this done before my first heroic? Is there a magical item lvl to aim for for gems/enchants? 333, 346, purple only?
i started gemming and enchanting my gear at 346 mark. mind you, not on this mage, but on my druid.

dont bother gemming and/or enchanting 333 gear imo.

Please don't listen to this bad. Enchant/gem your gear no matter what. All skimping out on gems can do is hurt your performance. You don't even have to buy the expensive ones, every little bit helps.
^^^ This. Try and always have your gear at its best potential. Put a belt buckle on your waist and gem it with a +40 intellect gem too. I am a fresh 85 as well on my first max-level, gratz :)
Like the other guy said, it's not worth the expense to gem/chant anything you already have when you hit 85. The only things worth gemming/chanting are gear you get from heroics, and gear you get from the justice point vendor. Anything other than that is a waste of money, you'll be replacing it in a matter of hours/days. Besides, if you're arcane (you probably should be) it's very likely you'll have threat issues with a lot of tanks in heroics even in unenchanted 333 gear, let alone chanted and gemmed 346+.

tldr: the other two guys are wrong, don't waste your gold on stuff you'll replace instantly.

Sheep makes me to go into combat when near it

    Hi guys,

A couple days ago, before today's patch, I was sheeping mobs so I could pick herbs. I noticed that often (but not always) I would agro the sheep when I approached the herb, and I would 'go into combat' (ie the sword icon is displayed on my toon's portrait frame).

I am sheeping from a distance, so I am not in combat when I cast. During the whole time I am herbing, I obviously don't break my own sheep.

With all the game mechanics changes of late (I haven't played this mage much for a over a year) I don't think what's happening is right. It's a big pain for me when I have to go invisible to dump agro so I can mount up.

Is this a bug? Was it fixed in today's patch?

    Cheers,
    Nap

The patch notes say that if you get too close to a cc'd mob it will aggro. Might be a little ambiguous but that's what I got out of it.
    # Crowd Control

    * Many crowd control abilities no longer cause creatures to attack players when they are cast. The creature will not attack the player when the crowd control wears off, and nearby creatures will not become hostile to the player either. However, if a visible player gets too close to the target creature, the creature will remember and attack the player when the crowd control effect wears off. The intent is to make it easier for dungeon groups to manage crowd control assignments and pulling packs of hostile NPCs. The abilities affected by this change are: Hibernate, Entangling Roots, Wyvern Sting (will still cause hostility when it begins to deal damage), Freezing Trap, Polymorph, Repentance, Shackle Undead, Blind, Hex, Bind Elemental, Banish, Seduction.

    >> Erythos, thanks for the heads up.

I guess that in dungeons it means more mobs to fight and more exp, but in the PvE world, I only see this change as a time waster for mage gatherers as the cooldown on invisibility is 3 minutes.

Why is SAP omitted from the list?

Edit: checked cooldown and it's 3 not 10 min.
i don't understand the issue... pre-4.2, sheep would put u in combat... in 4.2, they made it so sheep didn't put u in combat... assuming ur not standing near the sheep, are you still having to invis out?

also, sap doesn't put u in combat to begin with b/c you're in stealth... so it wasn't applicable to the change..
Maybe it's been too long since I played this toon. I just don't seem to remember having to fight many mobs while I was herbing in Northrend while I was levelling to 80.

When travelling out in the world (ie not instances) perhaps polymorph (and the others) could not put you into combat if you're not already in combat. Anyway, my thoughts.

    The race dilemma

I know this isnt usually what people post on the Mage forums but I dont know who to turn to. Ive been doing research, reading stickies and watching youtube videos as well as trying them out in game for 5 levels. I am refering to what race to make my Mage (Horde that is).

I've narrowed it down to Goblin and Orc seeing as on my main server I have a Blood Elf Mage and Undead Mage. Troll isnt an option, I cant get into them no matter how hard I try. And with that being said I seek the help of anyone who would hear my plea.

Im not telling you to pick my race for me, I just need some constructive criticism concerning my choices thus far. After trying out the races to level 5 I have thought about it hard and come to the conclusion that I love the way female Orcs look in cloth gear but dislike the males. I cant get over the huge shoulders. The downside to Orc for me was the casting animation. I can get past that because thats what they made savory deviate delight for if it becomes too big an issue.

Concerning Goblins I have striclty decided to stick with males because I already have a female Goblin as my main on my main server. The server I am currently on is my alt server to try out new race/class combos. With that said the male Goblin casting animation is nice to me and gear looks nice on em. My only deal with them...well...their racials tend to be behind other Horde races in terms of PvE and thats my focus is PvE but with PvP when I can.

With this wall of text out of the way, and you all getting a good idea as to what it is I am looking for, I ask you all to please giving me advice on what I should do. I really need help because this is really bothering me. I have an OCD type of personailty and I want to do it right the first time and not want to regret my decision 50 levels down the road.

I have literally deleted 80 and 85 toons because I didnt like certain things about em just to reroll. I wish to avoid this. Thanks for your patience and reading my text.

TL;DR - Female Orc or Male Goblin for a mage.
    Orc Mages UNITE!

I think our buff shoulders are a huge advantage-- definitely the most intimidating looking mage till they make Tauren Mages.

The SP Buff is nice and it makes for bigger burst phases, but if you wanted the Min/Max answer its obviously human because Human racials> everyone else for every class ever.

The haste boost for Goblins is pretty solid, but you are basically a green gnome with no facial hair. . .
if ur doing competetive high lvl play in pve or pvp ud want orc for the berserk buff. the haste buff from the gob doesnt give the same advantage. I myself selected gobby because i love the rocket jump, its like a 2nd blink and it saves me alot.
Don't forget the goblin jump can be used while silenced. Garrotted in a Smoke Bomb? Gob Jump. Strangulated? Gob Jump. See a predictable stun incoming (Kidneyshot, Throwdown, etc.)? Gob Jump.

Not to mention just using it to gain distance for a variety of reasons, LoS'ing damage or getting into LoS of a heal.
Thank you all for some very nice responses.

I definately wouldnt mind a Goblin for sure but what I am trying to do is not make the same mistake I did on my main realm. That being pretty much every class I rolled was a Blood Elf. I want to avoid making the same race twice and I already have a Goblin Hunter so I might as well go Orc for my Mage. I didnt discover the other wonderful races' full potential till I made Awai here a Tauren. Ever since I enjoyed the other races, except Troll. I have my reasons, painful reasons.

None-the-less thank you all. I believe I shall be going with the Female Orc. They look really awesome and I can get past the casting animation. After all I got used to Undead and I dislike Undead casting animations....well male that is.
Now on to the dilemma of coming up with a female Orc name.

World of Warcraft names....the bane of my time here. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy coming up with good and original names. Take Awai here for instance. I am part Indian myself, Cherokee. His name is actually a word from my language translated into Tauraje.
    Gnome.

    Gnomes make Horde angry.
    Gnome.

    Gnomes make Horde angry.

    This is correct :(
    Gnome.

    Gnomes make Horde angry.

Not true. I r luv gnomies!

And alot of horde like gnomes. They can make great footballs.

Not the best basketballs though, they tend to cling to the hoop. Makes it pretty hard to actually score....and even harder getting the "ball" back down...

    Difficulties with adds on Rag?

Normally, I can take out my add just fine but sometimes if it spawns right near the hammer, I have some trouble. My AB hits for anywhere between 16k and 150k, so sometimes it gets 1-shotted and other times 4-shotted. As a mage I don't have a reliable stun and my slows/freezes don't work. What's a good rotation for getting these guys to 50% health almost instantly before they get anywhere close to sulfuras?
Rotation is obviously AB spam. Unfortunately you won't be able to have any stacks up as even hitting on Rag before they spawn it drops off before just before they spawn.

Only thing you can really do to help out is save a Pom so you can pom/ab right away on the closest add you are working on. I found for my mage I could even take down one right next to the hammer, though it was really close. If you are on an add at least one further out you should be fine. To be safe just make sure you have people with stuns getting the two closest adds.
If the hammer lands near your target add, keep ABing Rag as long as possible. When he's gone, use Presence of Mind and pop the insta AB on your add. You should have all 4 stacks at this point, so murder that add ;)

Also, you may want to consider holding off on a second round of CDs in phase 1 to save it for your add. You may lose some dps overall, but it's better than 0 raid-wide dps ;)
If you get an AB off with .7 seconds of Rag going into the lava, you will be able to keep your 4 stack. As a safety precaution, keep your Presence of Mind cooldown in the event you dont get that last AB off on Rag. Pop PoM on your burn target and you will be back at 4 stacks. :)

    Confused about gear priority.

Until when is T11 4 pc bonus BiS?

I currently have it on my mage, but tomorrow I'll have enough valor to purchase 2 pc T12. Is it with upgrading? Or is T11 better?

PoM / Mana Gem - the new leetness

Found a trick the other night. Might be old news for some of you, but here you go-

When you cast PoM, you get the PoM buff and two stacks of Arcane Potency buff adding 15% crit chance. But PoM will not start its cooldown until its buff is used.

So cast a mana gem. It will start the recharge on PoM. Then you can enter any fight with two stacks of Arcane Potency and PoM ready to go.
Yeah, you can do the exact same thing by just canceling the buff too

    Recommended Spell Penetration?

So I just hit 85 a few days before the last patch came out and I have been PvPing a wee bit the last 2 days. My question is this: How much spell penetration should I have for PvP?
    Thanks. :)
    Sweet. Tyvm.

    ^This.

That said, for the frost spec (as distinct from Arcane and Fire), there used to be a "perfect" level of Haste that Frost Mages used to get an extra free lance/bolt off against a rooted target.

I don't know if it still works but it might be worth looking into.

    The brewfest trinkets

I'm curious if any of them are as useful as a volcano deck?
    nope
It's nice to see some crit on the http://us.battle.net/wow/en/item/71337 instead of the mastery you get on DMC. Right now for fun sometimes I stack the Stopwatch and DMC for arcane or fire pvp funsies. They're the only really good mage trinkets I've ever had so I don't really know the difference, but they sure as !@#$ get the job done for me! It's just stupid awesome lol. Oh yeah and one of them always seems to proc same time as power torrent now so that's just icing on the cake :).

    Arcane, 4.3 and beyond

As it stands at the moment Arcane Dps is in a good place. This is a thread to post what minor (or maybe major) changes you would like to see in 4.3 or beyond such as the next expansion. I am making this thread for those who enjoy the baseline playstyle of arcane and would like to see some improvements on that playstyle. As someone who enjoys arcane myself I am interested to see what the rest of the arcane community would like to see.

    Some groundwork.

    1. Please feel free to give people constructive feedback on their ideas. that does not mean dismissing them. Building and expanding on it until it is awsome is a much better alternative.

    2. This is an ARCANE MAGE IMPROVEMENT thread. We want to see some ways our class can be improved. not just a "swing the nerfbat" post.

    3. That brings us to 3. keep the discussion serious. This thread is (supposed) to be a helpful rescource for the betterment of the arcane mage.

    4. compile any changes you decide to make to your changes in your original post so others can read them!

    5. I may compile a list of favorite changes in a post so we can see and possibly vote on them.

Here is one possible post format

    Hey I am (insert name)

    I focus on Arcane (PvE/PvP/Both)

I like ( ) part about my playstyle.

I was hoping to see more of ( ) in the Arcane playstyle.

Some new talents and abilities I was thinking of were.

    1.( )

    2. ( )

    I would prefer ( ) change to ( ) change

Then just post some balance issues that you think should be resolved or that this will resolve or may come up due to your changes and how you could fix any of theses.

Remember this forum is to promote new ideas for the arcane mage. Have fun! be constructive! add some humor after the serious part of your post.
I'm not gonna follow your format but like to say I play PVP arcane and wish I had more survivability. Not sure how you could tweak it though without making arcane more OP than frost mage.
Ok then sorry about the format for anyone who finds it confusing. Just looking for what the arcane community is looking for as tweaks and changes for 4.3and beyond. I will try and edit the format later when i have some more time.
Lol perhaps more than one button to top the dps charts?

    Idea for Arcane

    Hey all.

I really enjoy playing Arcane. I'm not expert on the Mage mechanics by any means, and I know Arcane can be a fairly complex spec to master, but it does seem a little dull to me at times.

I was thinking maybe revamping the way Arcane handles the stacks of AB. For example, it continue's to stack up to 4 times, increasing the mana cost accordingly. But, the stacks don't fall off after a couple seconds. They stay up until you use "charge down" spells to reduce the stacks.

Perhaps add in a new...short cast time damage spell that does mediocre damage but effectively reduces the charge by one charge. Lets say its called "Arcane Lazer" for the sake of this idea.

You could do your burn phase as normal, which is a staple of the spec and an aspect that arcane Mages enjoy. Then when you go to the regen phase it could be more interactive.

You could stack AB to 4 stacks, then cast "Arcane Lazer" to reduce to two stacks, cast it back up to 4 stacks, cast it back down - pop arcane missles to clear stacks and consume charges, or cast ArcBar to clear stacks and consume charges.

I just thought this might be a neat idea to add a little more of a dynamic element to the arcane tree. i'd like to hear other people's opinions.

    Thanks,

    Massic

ABar and AM already do this.

    Fire mage trinket question

Just now I received Heroic Bell of Enraging Resonance from Heroic Atramedes. I checked Elitist Jerks forum, but it seems that the BiS list for fire mage is outdated. I use Rawr Debug Build 4.1.05.60775 and it says that my current trinkets are BiS for my build (fire). I tried to add couple more BiS (ilvl 372) items in Rawr and its still saying Soul Casket is better than this trinket. I even put all BiS items and still, DMC: Volcano + Soul Casket are still best.

The weird thing is Rawr says crit > mastery in relative stat value, however it picks Soul Casket over the Bell. Is Rawr being programmed to give preference towards "usable" trinket rather than "proc"? So, is Soul Casket better than Heroic Bell of Enraging Resonance?
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but iirc as Fire mastery is your weakest stat, I'm unsure about the specifics, but I think the Heroic Bell and Heroic Mirror are your BiS, i think with the 359's the DMC:V might be better than the mirror because you can reforge the mastery to hit (if you need it) but I'm a bit rusty there. The bell should be better than the VP trinket though.

Edit: after I stopped being Lazy and pulled up the gear lists that SimC uses, it looks like the DMC and V&T trinket are the BiS trinkets, which are both valued for their int procs. Assuming you don't have a mirror available I believe the Bell is your next best choice, and I can't see the 359 soul casket being better than the 372 Bell.
Can't remember where I read it, but I think "on use" trinkets in Rawr are modeled assuming they are used at optimal times(i.e. Bloodlust, Volcanic Potion(I think), coordination with other procs, and possibly Combustion). The DPS value/ranking displayed in Rawr may be a lot higher than you might actually see in a given encounter or even training dummy sessions because of this. I believe you can change this behavior in your settings.

I've seen this debate many many times because it's counter intuitive to what we know about the spec, so let me break it down.

When comparing the tradeoffs between the two trinkets, think of it this way.

Soul Casket, gives you a overall higher DPS potential and control over when it is applied.

Bell of Enraging Resonance in comparison, will give you a lower "top end" DPS potential, but improve the reliability of your DPS(it will lower the overall variance of your DPS over a given time period). That 2% extra crit lessens the chance of a "dry spell", increases Hot Streak procs, additional chances to keep your ignite rolling which can lead to higher combustions AND more opportunities to use Combustion.

Nothing better than hitting a dry spell on Halfus when you really need to get a big combustion rolling. On my attempts last night, I would hit 70k+ on some pulls, and 30k or less on others doing the exact same thing. Any trinket that lessens that variance is a welcome addition to me.

Bell is the hands-down winner IMO because it really helps the spec function properly, regardless of what the simulations say.

    PvP Arcane Mage spec?

I know that Frost is the PvP spec. But I just want to screw around as Arcane for a while.
But if anyone has a decent one.. :P
all specs are PvP spec if used right. I PvPed as all 3 and did pretty well, im currently arcane PvPing as its very fun. try mines if your curious, just dont get too attached.
Your spec is the opposite of Player vs. Player.
Mekkaku, your spec is actually pretty bad. You want to pick up Imp mana gem, but you DON'T want all those missle talents (they suck).

As arcane, you need as much survivability as you can, so you want to pick up Imp CoC.

    For the OP:

    http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2593049272

Read through that, it gives some detail into each spec and gives a basic talent build for each.
I made a quick Arcane PvP spec:
    http://www.wowhead.com/talent#oGIbroGoMRRoZcdb

You have the Imp CoC, with less CDs. All the Dmg Reduction you can get in the Arcane tree. Hope it helps.

EDIT: I think this might be better:
    http://www.wowhead.com/talent#oGIbroGMMRMoZcbb
I put points in Incaters Absorption. Leaving 1 point for Arcane Tactics, or Focus Magic. I say, for BGs and fun, use Arcane Tactics. If you want to arena with Arcane, Focus Magic.
my spec worked just fine in BGs and arena. but i guess a little rework couldnt hurt. should be more suited to PvP now :)

I think mages should be able to polymorph things into a newt.

    Why you ask?

    You want the Mage Forum
Ah ty, didn't think of that for some reason.
Can this version of the thread be removed by a blue? I originally posted in the wrong forum and this is now just a preceding duplicate post since I reposted on mage forum.

Haunt of Flies or Firelord Gloves

I'm getting towards the end of my VP gear. I logged in my fishing set ... opps.

Which would be a better upgrade? I have an iLevel 353 cape from Zandalari instances and Firebloom gloves.

I already use DMC:Volcano and Stump for Trinkets, have the Firelord Robe/Legs and the VP ring.

I have Ramkahen boots so the VP boots look not as appealing to me.

I'm leaning towards the cape because it is a better upgrade and I don't see myself with shoulders/head of T11 anytime soon because I've not been able to raid, so the 4-pc set isn't likely in my near future which would put the gloves on top of the cape.

    hi guys pls help

as an arcane mage all we do is spam arcane blast is that it?

i got used to playing destro for years, like, i suppose i could be overthinking at this point. like..i havent played a toon that just used 2-3 spells save for my resto sham (depending on the situation)

but pve destro and shadow its just a bunch of stuff being cast BEFORE using damage spells, and for arcane its just arcane blast and wait for missiles to proc? of course, the mandatory arcane power if needed. iits just 2-3 buttons is that it?

just confirming i dont wanna get yelled at in dungeons.
    no. you're doing it wrong.
Anything before heroics you can pretty much just AB spam, evocate if the boss is still alive, then AB spam again and he'll be dead before you go OOM.

I'd still practice a mana conservative rotation on trash though, just so it's not a completely new concept to you at 85.

    ^Also read that.
hey ive tried everything to get my dps up rotation wise popping this gem that proc etc. im about to give up on mages
i dont knwo if this is any concern
    but rotation is
    1) stack AB 4x
    2)a)use arcane missiles
b)if no proc use arcane barrage
    3) got back to step one

now if u want to concerve mana you can try saving gems changing race to belf potions evocation anything really use it at 60% becaus ehigher mana you ahve higher dps you do so try using all cooldowns to maintain 60+ shouldnt be too hard with buffs
    tell me how it goes
First: I know back in the Wrath days Arcane wasn't really viable until end-game, I don't know if this holds true for Cata but I'm sure a future commenter can chime in on that.

Secondly: Arcane is a difficult spec to enjoy. Most of the pure fun of Arcane only comes through if topping the dps meters is your sole goal. As such, in lower level content Arc can be very hard to really get into, thus making it difficult to learn. I play Fire and love it, as a result I'm always finessing and learning more about it. If you're having trouble learning Arc, try one of our other two fully PvE viable specs (Don't EVER let anyone convince you Frost isn't viable in PvE.)

Third: You're underthinking it, not over thinking it. :) Playing Arcane well is like dancing on an evaporating floor, which is the say the more mana you have the better your dance steps (Nukes) will be.

The rotation is usually as such, from what I remember:
(Burn) Arcane Blast until you're down to 80% mana, then pop a mana gem.
(Conserve) Arcane Blast x 4 then Arcane Missiles if it procs, Arcane Barrage if it doesn't till you hit 40% mana then pop Evocation.
Repeat above until target is dead.

I use IceHUD to let me know when I'm at the prescribed mana levels so I know when to pop my respective cooldowns, but there are plenty of alternatives out there.

In general Arcane is unique in that it's a spec that one can either faceroll to success or can fine tune to even greater success. Three to five buttons, tens of thousands of deeps.

Hang in there! And if you find you're not enjoying it, come on over to the dark side and play Fire, you'll have a blast! (Literally.)

    Question about Fire

OK so I'm going to try out fire, but I'm wondering if and when Fire Blast would be used?
    fire for pve or pvp?
    PvE
When moving or to spread damage via impact.
So basically only use it when that procs to spread damage.
I PvP pretty much exclusively so admittedly, I'm not the foremost expert on the subject, but that's the only situation I can think of where you would use it in PvE. I know I said while moving, but scorch spam is obviously the better option there, unless you're just moving a couple steps to get out of some fire or something.
    Thankies

T12 2p set not working with mirror glyph

I was shocked today to find out that the T12 2p bonus mirror image wont cast AB. (With glyph of MI active) what the heck? I was really hoping the MI would help proc AM during conserve phases. And my mini-me only comes for 12 secs. instead of 15 like stated. that equals only 4 fireball casts of 6-8k roughly with a ICD of 45 sec. Should this be right?
Glyph does not work with the 2p this is intended.
the rest is lag getting in the way of the images uptime and when it starts/stops castings.

    Improve Arcane Blast Needed?

Just wondering if the Improve AB is necessary? I know what you get a 6% inc damage against snared/slowed targets but do snares/slows effect bosses? Thx :)
If you're talking about Torment the Weak then yes, it's a mandatory talent and bosses are affected by it.

edit: If you're talking about Nether Vortex then it's situational depending on the fight. Most tanks have a snare/slow applied to the boss most of the time, but I like the peace of mind and have 2/2 Vortex for 100% uptime. You'll definitely want it if there are any adds during the encounter like Ragnaros.

    Matching Sets WITHOUT robe

anyone got any cool sets of gear they're going to be wearing next patch? specifically ones that don't include robes?

I've been trying to find that perfect pair of pants and shirt for my gear and I was wondering if anyone else has any good sets. Of course, gloves and shoes are going to need to match as well... how about a nice belt? ... Anyway, what's a good looking set?

and NO stupid freaking black mageweave sets PLEASE. You know exactly what I mean.
the ultimate vest set for mages is 8.5

    Mages in pvp

Arcane Blast damage done has been reduced by 5%

Deep Freeze and Ring of Frost will cause diminishing returns on each other, in addition to the spells they normally share diminishing returns with

Well mages blizzard obviously hates you. I mean mages are already terrible in pvp arent they? not enough damage or control
Nerfing instant CC that is clearly OP means blizzard hates us?

No more like blizzard isn't st-

Oh I get it, another warrior complaining about mages. Listen, get a dispeler, and you shouldn't lose to mages.

Also, since when do mages cast AB in pvp?
Xiunn your being mean, we are simply not fair when we have 5-6k worth of spell power procs. It isn't fair that a spec with no defense is allowed to do a ton of damage every 2 minutes when they aren't touched.

    Impact and Living Bomb broken?

Hi, I just got done doing Heroic Blackrock Caverns to see how the change to Impact and Living Bomb effected my dps. After a few pulls I noticed that after I used Impact on a target with LB I wasn't seeing the usual LB animation on other targets. I clicked through the group and noticed that LB had not spread to any of them. I tested this on the rest of the pulls and came out with the same results.

Has anyone else noticed this issue?
    Another patch another impact bug!
I tested it out on the training dummies in Org (the ones that used to be broken for Fire mages) and now it works fine. I'm going to try to get into another heroic to see if I get different results in a different dungeon.

Edit: Seems to work fine in Grim Batol. Could it be just the instance?
I am getting the same issue, but not just with living bomb. It seems impact is not spreading any of my dots to other targets. Tried the training dummies first, nothing happend. Then i did blackrock caverns and noticed that during the entire instance my pyroblasts and ignites were not spreading so my dps was significantly less than normal. Its been this way in and out of instances.
    6k Multi-Target to match the 6k Single

    Playing this right?

I pull dps well enough (22k burn, 14-15k conserve). I feel like I am an ok mage. Yet i always have people here and there who tell me im gearing wrong, that my rotation is wrong, and things along those lines.

I have inspected many mages on my server that raid on the core teams of top guilds, ive also searched mages such as ones from Huge in Japan and other top guilds, and i try and follow their gearset as close as possible. I do my research, I ask questions, Ive been on elitist jerks, and from what i can tell, im doing what they tell me to do.

I guess what i am asking is, upon looking at my gear and whatnot, Am i doing something wrong? Or am i doing things properly, and should i stay on this route throughout my progression.
Belt needs 2x 40 int gems
    Helm needs 40 int gem (1 int = 3.5 mastery) thus 20 extra int > 50 mastery
Boots need 40 int gem + Lavawalker enchant
Chest needs Peerless Stats enchant (20 all stat)
Pants need 40 int gem instead of Veiled Demonseye.

Get rid of the blue trinket and buy a DMC: Volcano card. Work through molten front and pick up the Moonwell Chalice.

Valor ring is your next upgrade besides that.

Keep trying to get a Theralion's Mirror.

Aside from all of this you likely to just have rotation and/or uptime issues as far as constant dps.

PS. Without running your char through simc i'd probably say you've reforged out of crit a bit too much. Yes it's typically not as valuable as mastery but not by that much.
I feel the exact same way. Syyx could you review my gear and tell me what im doing wrong? I'm goign to replace all my gems to +40 int after your mentions 1 int = 3.5 mastery.

BTW whats up with your guys hit cap, dont you need to hit 17%?
Improved gear tends to sacrifice hit. If you can keep it under 1% miss chance you'll be ok.

Yea you need a lot of Int gems. Better to have a Veiled Demonseye (20 int 20 hit) in the blue slot in your chest, for more Int.

Bell is ok for a trinket but getting your hands on a Mirror and Chalice would be the way to go for trinkets until you could get something like Shard of Woe and Lightning capacitor.

Get the 50 Int enchant on bracers and lavawalker on boots.

Do the above and your #1 priority is to replace your weapon with mh/oh or a better staff.

All this aside, the problem usually always comes down to the arcane mages rotation.
